What video formats can I upload?

There are many different video containers, codecs and formats out there. These add up to literally thousands of different combinations. While we do our best to support as many formats as possible, we simply cannot ensure that any uploaded video will work.

Supported formats

Here is a list of video formats we do support:

WMV (WMV, WMV2, MSMPEG,VC-1)
MOV (Sorenson Video 3, H263, H264, animation) (Certain MOV files have audio encoded such that they cannot be transcoded without loss of sync with the video)
MPEG4 (mp4, 3ivx, DivX, Xvid, H264)
FLV (VP6 and Sorenson Spark)
DV and DVCPro
3GP (mobile phones)
MPEG1 and MPEG2
AVI (Indeo, Cinepak, Motion JPEG, MPEG)
F4V (H264)

Since we use the FFMPEG framework for transcoding videos, all other formats supported by FFMPEG can be uploaded too.

Not supported

A few formats we occasionally encounter, but NOT supported are:

Quicktime (MOV) files that use the Apple ProRes codec (part of Final Cut). This codec also produces extremely large files. We advise to do a rough export from Final Cut Pro.
Quicktime (MOV) files that actually only contain a raw DV stream (some DV cameras export these). Export these files using either raw DV or H264/AAC Quicktime.
Quicktime (MOV) files with 24-bit audio.
DRM protected files from Microsoft (WMV) or the iTunes Store (M4V, MOV).
CSS encrypted DVD images (VOB).
WMV videos using the MSS2 video codec (for screencasting)

What format do I use to upload my entry?

Review recommended specifications for detailed information regarding preparation of your video for upload.

File Size - For ease in uploading, your video should not have a file size greater than 500MB total. The encoding can be adjusted to accommodate a reduced file size. Two-pass encoding can help reduce file size especially for video with a lot of motion or cuts ie: sports entries. Reducing the encoding bitrate is the easiest way to reduce file size.
Video Scale (Dimensions) - The video player will have a 480x360 (4:3 Aspect Ratio) video display area. If the video is smaller in size, it will be centered within the player video area. If the video is larger, the encoding process will resize the video.
Aspect Ratio - The player uses 4:3 aspect ratio. 16:9 aspect ratio video will be letterboxed in the player.
- The aspect ratio of the original source video should always be maintained when it's uploaded: Uploaded videos should never include letterboxing or pillarboxing bars. The player automatically adds black bars so that videos are displayed correctly without cropping or stretching, whatever the size of the video or the player.
- If letterboxing is added to a video before it is uploaded (to create a 4:3 video from a 16:9 master for example), the widescreen player will add pillarbox bars too, resulting in black bars all around the video (windowboxing) and a bad viewing experience.
Frame Rate - The number of frames per second should not be less than 24. It is recommended that the frame rate be 29.97 or 30 frames per second to provide the best quality possible.
Video Bitrate - The recommendation is a bitrate of 700kbps if this allows enough compression to meet the file size limitation. Two-pass video encoding can help reduce file size and keep an overall higher bitrate. It is recommended to not go below 400kbps if possible. Use the Adobe bitrate calculator

VIDEO UPLOAD INSTRUCTIONS

Overview:

Submit your entry (the online paperwork) first, then arrange for payment, then you'll be brought to the Payment Summary Page. You will find a link to Upload Video; click this link. Additionally, you'll receive an EMMY® Express - Email Copy of EMMY® Entry confirmation, and the link will be provided at the bottom to upload your video entry. This will bring you to the Welcome to the EMMY® Express Video Upload Process page.

1. The first step is to make sure that you have the Entry ID Number and Submitter’s email address; refer to the EMMY® Express – Email Copy of EMMY® Entry receipt.

2. Proceed to the Upload Process page; follow instructions provided on the page (step-by-step details, below).

Video File Upload Requirements:

The video file size must not be larger than 500MB. The video width must be 480 or less. Larger width video will be rejected.

Proceed to UPLOAD PROCESS

Step 2: Video File Upload

Use the drop down box to select your category
Then, use the 2-digit Entry ID number. For example, if your entry ID number is 40B-14, you need the "14"
Then enter the same email address that you provided on the entry form
Select the box that you "Agree to the Terms" of uploading video

Step 3: Upload Video

Select the video from your computer files by Browsing; be sure that you are uploading correct file type. Select UPLOAD
Wait for video to upload, depending on the size of your file it should take a couple of minutes or longer.
DO NOT close your browser during the process, or the video upload won't work

Video Encoding In-Progress

Click on the thumbnail, when the status shows “ready”, to play the video.
This process will take on average about 2 minutes for each minute of video to complete the 2 encodings, but can take considerably longer if the server has backlog on encoding.

Step 4: Complete the Upload

Did the video upload and play properly?
Did you "approve" the video?
Select Approve, or Reject & Delete
Click FINISH

You will receive an email receipt confirming your video upload is completed and confirmed.
